feldfünf Resident: Anna Banout

***English version below***

Salt of the Earth

We are very pleased to welcome Anna Banout as our feldfünf resident. Anna Banout is a conceptual designer and artist. She graduated from the Faculty of Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 2017 and currently lives and works in Berlin. In her work she focuses on themes of identity and human-object relationships, continously blurring boundaries between design process and storytelling, craft and technology. Banout is the winner of the Designblok Diploma Selection 2017 and designer for Tre Product. Her works were presented at Gdynia Design Days, Łódź Design Festival, Ambiente Frankfurt, Maison&Objet Paris; she has exhibited in galleries and venues around the world – most recently in Warsaw, Paris, Beirut, Oslo, Brussels.

Bread is without a doubt the most basic element of most of the world’s cuisines – it comes in a variety of forms and undergoes slight recipe alterations depending on a specific region while still remaining an universal symbol of gathering, sharing and coming together as a community within many religions and cultures. For the feldfünf residency, Banout will develop her project Salt of the Earth – a design investigation revolving around bread, both symbolically and as a material. In May, she will present her works in a solo exhibition at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg. https://www.mkg-hamburg.de/de/ausstellungen/vorschau/syria-2087.html

Salt of the Earth aims to question the invisible divisions within societies, finding new contexts through experimentation and proposing an exploration of cultural experience through bread. Breaking the bread becomes a symbol of breaking the ice between people; interacting with and getting to know one’s new neighbours, their stories, struggles and experiences, sharing approaches and ideas while challenging the cultural differences over the most common act of sustaining a community – bread making – can be a first step to breaking the taboos and stereotypes in our everchanging societies.
