Unnatural Ecologies, der vierte Akt in Bethan Hughes' laufendem künstlerischen Forschungsprojekt Hevea, erkundet die komplexe Beziehung zwischen der botanischen Substanz Naturkautschuk und der menschlichen Kultur.
Hevea Act 4 entfaltet sich in einer Reihe von Installationen, die Skulptur, animierte Bilder, Text und Druck kombinieren. Das Projekt basiert auf Recherchen, die während einer dreimonatigen Residency bei feldfünf Anfang 2021 begannen, und konzentriert sich auf eine Serie neu geschaffener Skulpturen aus Latex und Stahl sowie eine immersive Bewegtbildarbeit. In Verbindung zu Queerness und Begehren versucht Unnatural Ecologies zu analysieren, wie Gummi nicht nur menschliche und pflanzliche Körper verknüpft, sondern auch mit dem Aufstieg der Moderne, des Imperialismus und des Kapitalismus verbunden ist.
Wie die Forscherin Delfina Cabrera in The Disorder of Things schreibt, einem Auftragsessay, der Teil der digitalen Publikation zur Ausstellung ist: „Latex und Kautschuk sind in der Tat außergewöhnliche Substanzen, die es uns ermöglichen, über die Techniken und Technologien nachzudenken, die Körper und Materialien in unnatürlichen Ökologien produzieren und miteinander in Beziehung setzen.“ Die Publikation enthält auch ein Gespräch mit dem Künstler Sajan Mani und dem Wissenschaftler Antony George Koothanady.

Unnatural Ecologies, the fourth act in Bethan Hughes’ ongoing artistic research project Hevea, is an exploration of the complex relationship between the botanical substance natural rubber and human culture. The project unfolds through a series of installations that combine elements of sculpture, moving-image, text and print.
Based on research initiated during a 3-month residency at feldfünf in early 2021, Hevea Act 4 centers around a series of newly created sculptures made using latex and steel and an immersive moving-image work. With its links to queerness and desire, Unnatural Ecologies attempts to parse how rubber binds human and plant bodies not only with one another but with the rise of modernism, imperialism, and capitalism.
As the researcher Delfina Cabrera writes in The Disorder of Things, a commissioned essay that forms part of the digital publication accompanying the exhibition: “Latex and rubber are indeed extraordinary substances that allow us to reflect on the techniques and technologies that produce and relate bodies with materials in unnatural ecologies.” The publication also features a joint conversation with the artist, Sajan Mani, and the academic, Antony George Koothanady.
