URBAN.TALK # 3: „Find Your Public! Spatialising urbanities in European cities”

URBAN.TALK # 3 “Find Your Public! Spatialising urbanities in European cities“
As part of the series: Nicht neu formen, sondern umformen!

with Prof Dr Maria Goula (landscape architect, Barcelona / Cornell University, Ithaca)
Followed by a discussion with Thilo Folkerts (landscape architect 100land, Berlin)
In collaboration with guest curator Dr Lisa Diedrich, professor of landscape architecture and director of the Research Platform SLU Urban Futures of SLU University, Malmö.

Barcelona became famous for its collective project of remaking the democratic city in the 1980s. By then urban designers saw Barcelona’s citizens as the generic users of their newly created urban open spaces. Now, three decades later, user groups are understood much more specifically, including bikers, elderly, children, who all share the same spaces with a constant flow of immigrants and a pressing crowd of tourists – phenomena familiar to other European cities. Through a critical presentation of a few early and several contemporary open urban spaces this talk discusses Barcelona’s design tradition. The recent turn to landscape architecture gets particular attention, having introduced resiliency and biodiversity thinking into the urban regeneration projects, to provide everyday environments for both humans and other-than-human beings.

Lecture and discussion in English language.

Prof Dr Maria Goula is a practicing landscape architect in Spain and the U.S., and professor of landscape architecture at Cornell University in Ithaca, U.S. She is a founding member of the International Biennial of Landscape Architecture in Barcelona.
Thilo Folkerts is a Berlin based landscape architect researching urban open space experimentally and internationally from his office 100Landschaftsarchitektur.

feldfünf invited Lisa Diedrich to organise a threefold lecture series with international actors in the fields of urbanism and landscape architecture. Their research and practice embraces experiments for urban futures – to upgrade the informal districts of Argentine metropolises, to define home for urbanised aboriginal communities in Australia, to continuously reshape the public space of European cities. This endeavour focuses on redesign rather than on new forms, on fundamental figures of thought for remixing the city, and on design from the ground up – it is an invitation to experiment with neighbourhoods, cultures and urbanities, also in this country, also in the district around the new activity spaces of feldfünf, in the very centre of Berlin.
