Salt of the Earth - Einzelausstellung von Anna Banout
Kuratiert von Clementine Butler-Gallie
17.07. – 09.08.2020

About the Exhibition:

Salt of the Earth - Solo exhibition by Anna Banout
Curated by Clementine Butler-Gallie
17.07. 09.08.2020

Bread is a universal symbol of gathering and sharing, a basic feature of many of the worlds cuisines and a cultural and social symbol. To throw bread away is a sin against the generations who grew up in times of poverty and food shortage. Bread can be a bargaining card in political conflicts; a tangible source of survival for some, whilst elsewhere its abundance generates such waste that competitions to eat 100 pieces of bread in 5 minutes become a feasible source of entertainment.

Salt of the Earth is a research-based, artistic investigation with bread as the protagonist. The project takes the simplicity of the food and the multiplicity of its forms and symbolisms to experiment with ways in which stories can be told. The investigation weaves multiple narratives into one and represents diversity as togetherness.

The diverse notions surrounding bread are explored artistically through a collaboration between designer Anna Banout and curator Clementine Butler-Gallie. The ongoing project will be presented at feldfünf in the form of an intervention that marks a point in the research process. Through a desire to challenge the form and order of exhibition making, Salt of the Earth will act as a library for a project still in progress. The visitors are invited to join the production process by sharing their stories and experiences between July 16th and August 9th.
