New Nature Vitrines | Schaufensterausstellung kuratiert von Samara Chadwick and Sandra Teitge

New Nature Vitrines ist eine Untersuchung all dessen, was jenseits der menschlichen Vorstellung von "Natur" liegt – unfassbar, ehrfurchtslos, monströs. Das Programm versammelt audiovisuelle und Sound-Arbeiten zeitgenössischer Künstler*innen, Filmschaffender, Technolog*innen und Wissenschaftler*innen, wobei Geschichten und Perspektiven im Vordergrund stehen, die den inhärenten Anthropozentrismus von Bildern hinterfragen, häufig indem sie die Codes und Konventionen von Naturfilmen aufgreifen oder sie ganz untergraben. Die in Deutschland, Kanada, Mexiko und den USA ansässigen Künstler*innen schlagen komplizierte Soundscapes, sich in der Luft befindende und mikroskopische Perspektiven sowie Bilder vor, die von Flechten, Schmutz, Fell und Bakterien geprägt sind. Ihre Arbeiten graben komplexe biologische Systeme, Interspezien und Computersysteme aus, die sich alle in einem ständigen Zustand des Werdens befinden, mit Realitäten jenseits unseres Bewusstseins interagieren und eigenwillige Neuerfindungen unserer Beziehung zur natürlichen Welt hervorrufen.

Die Arbeiten werden vom 16. November bis 6. Dezember 2020 in den Vitrinen von ausgewählten Ausstellungsräumen in drei verschiedenen Berliner Stadtteilen – feldfünf (Kreuzberg), Berlin Weekly (Mitte) und goeben berlin (Schöneberg) – sowie im Goethe-Institut Montreal (16.–30. November 2020) and Goethe Institut New York (15. Dezember 2020 bis 8. Januar 2021) präsentiert. Die Platzierung in Fenstern quer durch die Stadt verteilt nutzt die Einschränkungen dieses von COVID dominierten Jahres, um dezentrale und unerwartete, emotionale und instinktive Begegnungen mit der Natur auf alltäglichen Fassaden unserer Städte darzustellen.

Die Film- und Videoarbeiten sind bei allen drei Ausstellungsräumen von außen zu sehen. Ausgewählte Arbeiten von Jenna Sutela werden zusätzlich bei feldfünf gezeigt; bei goeben berlin wird Joan Jonas’ “Waltz” separat zu den Arbeiten in der Vitrine präsentiert. Stereo-Sync-Audio wird über die Smartphones der Besucher*innen zugänglich gemacht. Bitte eigene Kopfhörer mitbringen.

New Nature Vitrines ist ein Programm des Goethe-Instituts Montreal, kuratiert von Samara Chadwick and Sandra Teitge, und produziert von Retune - Creative Technology Platform.

New Nature ist eine Reihe von Begegnungen im Laufe des Jahres 2020 zwischen zeitgenössischen Künstler*innen, Filmemacher*innen, VR-Gestalter*innen, Technolog*innen und Klimawissenschaftler*innen aus Deutschland, Kanada, Mexiko und den USA. New Nature ist eine Initiative des Goethe-Instituts Montreal und wird mit Unterstützung des Auswärtigen Amtes der Bundesrepublik Deutschland realisiert. Zu den Partnern gehören das National Film Board of Canada, das Centre Phi, das Milieux Institute der Concordia University, XR Hub Bavaria, das Museum of the Moving Image – Science on Screen sowie UnionDocs Center for Documentary Art, Massive Science und Retune-Creative Technology Platform.

New Nature Vitrines is an exploration of all that lies – unknowably, irreverently, monstrously - beyond the human notion of “nature”. The series assembles audiovisual and sound works by contemporary artists, filmmakers, technologists, and scientists, foregrounding stories and scales that interrogate the inherent anthropocentrism of images, often by riffing on the codes and conventions of nature films, or subverting them altogether. The artists, based in Germany, Canada, Mexico, and the United States, propose intricate soundscapes, airborne and microscopic perspectives, images imprinted by lichen, dirt, fur, and bacteria. Their works excavate complex biological, interspecies, and computational systems, all in a constant state of becoming, flickering with realities beyond our consciousness and invoking idiosyncratic reinventions of our relationship to the natural world.

The works are presented in the vitrines of exhibition spaces in three different Berlin neighborhoods – feldfünf (Kreuzberg), Berlin Weekly (Mitte), and goeben berlin (Schöneberg) – as well as at the Goethe Institut Montreal (November 16–30, 2020) and Goethe Institut New York (December 15, 2020 until January 8, 2021). Their placement in windows across the city diverts the restrictions of our COVID times to present decentralised and unexpected, emotional and visceral encounters with nature, springing forth from the quotidian facades of our cities.

The public is able to watch the moving image works from the outside at all three venues.  Selected works by Jenna Sutela are featured at feldfünf; Joan Jonas’ “Waltz” is presented separately to the works in the vitrines at goeben berlin. Stereo sync audio is made accessible through the visitors’ smartphones. Please bring your own headphones!

New Nature is a series of encounters over the course of 2020 between contemporary artists, filmmakers, immersive and VR creators, technologists, and climate scientists from Canada, Germany, Mexico and the US.
